Stephen's Story

My daughter Kitty went through a rough time when she switched schools. She is 13 years old now and to look at her you would think she did not have a care in the world, but it was not always like this.

In the weeks before she started her new school she began to not sleep at night, not eating and afraid to be left on her own, always wanting to be with someone. As any parents would be we were worried but thought that it would pass when she started school. It didn't.  During that first half of the year became gradually worse to the point that she was not sleeping at night, being sick and not wanting to do anything.

We were at are wits end. We took her to the doctor, he said it would pass.  We tried tough love but that seemed to make it worse. Everywhere we turned led us down a cul de sac.

After doing an internet search we found a web site www.newlifecounselling.net.  Here we found a group of people who offered a service that gave us hope that Kitty could be helped. We filled in a self referral form and waited.  Kitty started her counselling about 6 weeks later and the change we saw in her was dramatic within a few weeks.  Kitty's confidence grew and as she grew in that confidence so did we.

The one to one sessions helped Kitty deal with problems that we could not help her with, and as a parent that is very difficut to accept. Once Kitty got passed the word`counselling' which conjours up many scary images for adults let alone a child, she looked forward to her time with her counsellor, seeing the same person every week, somebody who did not judge her or expect things from her who took Kitty as she was, warts and all. That is what made New Life Counselling so special for Kitty.

Kitty today is a very different girl, her confidence is growing, she no longer stays awake all night, she doesn't need anyone close by.  She can stay sleepovers in her friends' houses. These things may same insignificant to you and me but to an eleven year old girl these are very important.
